healing process of microblading

Have you ever wondered how long it takes for microblading to heal?

Microblading is a semi-permanent tattooing procedure requiring a microblade to deposit pigment into the skin. It’s an increasingly popular treatment for sparse or damaged eyebrows, and the results can be stunning. But with any tattoo, there’s always concern about healing and how long it will take before you can show your new eyebrows to the world.

So, what’s the deal? How long does microblading take to heal? And what should you expect in terms of post-treatment care?

What You Need to Know Before Microblading Your Eyebrows

Microblading is a form of permanent makeup tattooing where pigment is implanted under your skin with a microblade to create the appearance of fuller, more defined brows. The microblading process usually takes about two hours and involves making very fine cuts in the skin to mimic natural brow hairs. The results typically last anywhere from 12-24 months, depending on skin type, lifestyle, and aftercare.

This video explains everything you need to know about microblading, so we suggest watching it first.

Pros and Cons of Microblading

Getting brow tattoo is popular not only because they are stylish. First off, it’s practical and convenient. After a microblading procedure, you’ll save time applying your eyebrow makeup daily. It can give you perfectly shaped brows without worrying about filling them in daily.

Microbladed brows also look more natural than traditional eyebrow tattoos because the pigment is carefully inserted and drawn into the top layers of skin, creating a more realistic look.

The only downside is minimal! Since the results are not permanent, you will have to have touch-ups done every few years to maintain your desired look.

The Microblading Procedure

On your microblading appointment, the technician will first assess your brows and choose the appropriate pigment colour and shade. They will then use a sterile microblade to create fine, individual hair strokes in your skin.

Note that during the actual procedure, a numbing cream will be applied at least twice: before and during the microblading procedure. You may feel slight discomfort, but it should not be too painful as long as your technician is careful.

In the days following your microblading appointment, you may experience some redness, swelling, and scabbing day by day microblading healing process. However, these side effects will resolve within a few days and are just part of your microblading recovery journey.

Microblading Stages of Healing: Day-by-Day Changes After the Procedure

For those considering microblading, it is important to understand what happens in the healing process of microblading. Can you go outside and meet people immediately, or should you wait a few days to facilitate eyebrow microblading healing? After all, eyebrows might look darker than usual during the first few days after the procedure.

As for the microblading healing timeline, it takes 28 days for the skin to regenerate and fully absorb the pigment after a microblading session. You will notice that the colour of your eyebrows will change throughout this period. They will go from dark to light as the ink settles on your skin.

This means that you should refrain from getting microblading the day before attending important events. It is best to get your eyebrows microbladed five to ten days before it to make sure the ink is settling well and the brows already look lighter.

Here is what you can expect to happen day by day during the healing stages of microblading.

Microblading Day1

You might be a little surprised and concerned since your eyebrows will look dark and dense right after the procedure. There will also be a tiny amount of redness that goes away in a few hours.

Since the anesthetic has already taken effect, you are not yet experiencing skin-related pain. However, you will notice a clear fluid, called lymph, surrounding your eyebrows. The skin naturally secretes lymph fluid as protection against wounds and infection. You can easily clean them by using a cotton pad and chlorhexidine.

Microblading Day 2

The next day after microblading, you may feel some pain when the anaesthetic has worn off. Remember, there are open incisions on your face. Be careful when moving around, as the skin is vulnerable. Your skin would still occasionally release lymph, but don’t worry. You just need to remove the liquid gently. Expect that your eyebrows will still look dark and thick.

Microblading Day3 onwards

The appearance of the eyebrows may change, becoming visually ‘thicker’. Pigment begins to set, and crusts may appear. You’ll want to get rid of these crusts, but you absolutely must not. With the crusts that you decide to remove by hand, you will damage the skin, affecting the pigment and the final appearance.

Note, if you want to get a similar eyebrow look after microblading but perform a more gentle procedure, it is better to resort to the hair technique. The principle is to trace the hairs, not with a manipulator, but with a traditional permanenting machine. The effect is similar to microblading; however, the side effect of tattooing is not as long as the maniple technique.

Microblading Day 7 onwards, scabbing and peeling process

You can expect scabbing, flaking, and peeling. This is perfectly normal and is simply the result of the skin’s natural eyebrow healing process.

During this period, the crusts will slowly dry out and fall off on their own, and they can start to itch. Avoid scratching your eyebrows, as the skin is still delicate and can quickly get infected. Simply allow the skin to shed its outer layer in its own time.

The colour of the eyebrows also starts to change. As the pigment progressively settles, the shade of the eyebrows can go partially lighter.

Microblading Day 11 onwards, skin heals

The skin heals, and the itching stops. By the end of the third week following treatment, the skin has fully recovered, but the pigment-settling process is still ongoing. Don’t be too careless, as changes could still take place.

After 28 Days

The skin has fully recovered, there are no longer any crusts, and the itching has subsided. This is how your eyebrows will look in the next few years. If you notice any imperfections, this is the best time to consult your tattoo artist regarding corrections.

Are Touchups Necessary?

Unlike traditional eyebrow tattoos, microblading creates hair-like strokes that mimic the natural growth pattern of your existing brows. The result is a more natural-looking brow that lasts up to 2 years

However, corrections and touchups are recommended. Here are the reasons why:

  1. Touchup refines the eyebrows’ colour and form. After healing, gaps may appear, the colour or shade may become muted, and the shape of the brows may change. A touchup treatment will correct these imperfections.
  2. Correction extends the life of your microbladed brows. The eyebrows get additional pigment, which lengthens the effect of micropigmentation.

You can choose when to touch up your microblading or microshading. We suggest getting your first touchup a month after the procedure since microblading eyebrows recovery takes time. The process can be repeated in six months, a year, or longer if you find it necessary.

Aftercare Instructions for Microbladed Brows

Aftercare is essential to the eyebrow microblading healing process and helps to ensure that your microbladed brows look their best.

The following products will help speed up the microblading healing process day by day:

  • Micellar water;
  • Vaseline;
  • Cotton pads;
  • An ointment that promotes regeneration.

Here are some aftercare tips to follow:

  • Being active or participating in sports is not advised for the first two to three days. It is forbidden to touch, moisten, or apply makeup to the treated area of the face for at least 24 hours after treatment. Sore skin should be cared for with disinfectant liquid, washing off protruding lymph at least twice a day.
  • Stay out of the sun for at least seven days after microblading. After a month, make sure to use good-quality sunscreen. This will help to prevent the pigmentation from fading.
  • Do not pick or scratch at your microbladed brows. Let them scab over and fall off naturally. Picking can cause scarring and damage to the skin.
  • Follow all the aftercare instructions from your tattoo artist.
